Both athletic and non-athletic individuals will experience soreness after performing unaccustomed or unfamiliar exercises. This soreness is caused by muscle damage and can last for up to 72 hours. This exercise especially eccentric in nature caused primarily by muscle damage is known as delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DOMS is a condition caused by muscle damage that usually appears after performing an eccentric exercise. It can cause decreased muscle force production and range of motion.

This condition is usually triggered by muscle damage during an exercise. It can also reduce a person's range of motion and cause soreness. The microscopic tears in muscle fibers are caused by the effects of microscopic motion. A reduction in motion can also lead to incapability to absorb shock. DOMS occurs when microscopic muscle fibers tear. It can also cause changes in the mechanical motion of tissues.

Differences in strength ratios can also cause excessive strain on the unaccustomed muscles of bodybuilders. Although extensive research has been done in this field, it is still not clear which method is best for treating DOMS. A mechanical motion that uses vibrations to improve muscle tone and flexibility. It can be used on the whole body or on the local area. A vibrating garment can be worn on the body to improve muscle strength, relieve muscle soreness, and increase range of motion. Vibration Technology was also effective in reducing DOMS and restoring full range of motion.

Vibration therapy is a type of non-invasive treatment that uses vibrations to improve range of motion and increase blood flow under the skin. It has been theorized that vibration enhances the kinaesthetic awareness. Vibration could represent an effective exercise intervention for enhancing neuromuscular performance in athletes.

Vibration therapy and DOMS Management

Vibration is an effective modality in the field of rehabilitation. Vibration therapy improves muscular strength, power development and kinaesthetic awareness, increased flexibility, motor unit synchronisation.

Various researches which shows effectiveness of vibration therapy in management of DOMS. Study experimentally revealed that DOMS and its modulation by vibration in elbow flexors muscles decreased muscle soreness, increased range of motion, increased blood flow under the skin. It was concluded that vibration relieved pain by activating the large diameter fibres while suppressing the transmission activity in small diameter fibres.

Vibration therapy prevents sarcoma disruption which occurs due to the strain of eccentric exercises and thus helps in preventing DOMS. Vibration therapy leads to increase of skin temperature and blood flow.

Based on the work done over time it can be hypothesized that vibration therapy may lead to an increased proprioceptive/neuro-muscular function, increased muscle power/strength, prevention of muscle atrophy, increased joint stability due to prevention of muscle atrophy/increased muscle strength and muscle stability, increased flexibility of muscles and joints, decreased muscle soreness/stiffness, preventing loss of bone mass/increasing bone mass, increased blood flow and oxygen uptake, potential hormonal responses leading to pain reduction, mood improvement, potentially improving lymphatic drainage.

Vibration therapy may be effective intervention as a treatment and control DOMS, enhances performance and help to prevent injuries.
